The Background

WestLB was about to roll out a new intranet and wanted to ensure that the intranet style guide, navigation and visual design had no major usability issues.

The company asked CVL to carry out research with the intranet’s target users to identify any high priority changes to be made before launch and directions for ongoing intranet development.

"CVL’s expertise was central to the success of this project. Their research provided us with invaluable information for the continued development of the intranet, enabling us to meet the expectations of staff and stakeholders."
Philip de Sausmarez,
Head of New Media, West LB

The CVL Solution

CVL conducted usability tests supplemented with expert usability evaluation to identify issues with the proposed site architecture, navigation devices, content templates and visual design.

Contextual user interviews were conducted with key stakeholders and staff across a range of job functions to identify additional user requirements to support key job-related processes and tasks. These were focused on the activities of trading staff where productivity and efficiency gains would have most commercial benefit.

CVL’s research revealed that the site architecture and navigation systems made the process of finding frequently-used content too lengthy, and was likely to put employees off using the intranet - keeping them relying on existing resources and sources of information.

The Benefits

WestLB benefited from a series of prioritised recommendations for enhancing the intranet style guide, giving the intranet team a clear definition of quick wins that could be implemented before launch.

CVL provided recommendations and illustrations of alternative structures and navigation devices to inform the intranet development roadmap, and made recommendations regarding task and content to support day-to-day work activities for key trading staff.
