The Background

Tesco Direct created a new catalogue for their rapidly growing range of non-food products, this catalogue was launched in September 2006. Tesco engaged CVL to provide a set of packaging specifications to support the launch of the catalogue. The specifications were required for non-branded products across the entire range, looking at both supplier and despatch packaging requirements.

“CVL helped us focus on getting a detailed understanding of the upstream and downstream packaging requirements for the Tesco Direct offer; eventually creating detailed packaging specifications.”
Gillan Hawkes, Category Manager, TescoDirect.com.

The CVL Solution

CVL carried out an analysis of range data and the identification of 39 packaging categories based on handling characteristics. CVL also created supplier and internal specification templates, enabling scalability to grow with the operation. Lastly, CVL created documentation to enable buyers to use specifications in negotiations.

The Benefits

By working with CVL, Tesco Direct was able to identify the consumables required to support the operation at launch, including types, materials and volumes.

Instrumental to the success of Tesco Direct's non-food catalogue was the creation of 39 supplier specifications including materials, methodologies, handling and environmental considerations - and the creation of eight internal despatch specifications, providing direction for packaging customer orders.
